Grief Cry is a poetic immersion into mourning and re-emergence into life. Grief is a liminal space of transformation. It’s where sorrow merges with the sacred and grief and grace co-exist in the same moment.
In the Medieval Old Norse poem,“Völuspá,” the god Odin listens to the Völva prophesy the world’s birth, death, and rebirth. 2021 marked a massive eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano near Reykjavík, eclipsed by the most recent one in December 2023. Nine years earlier in Iceland, the Okjökull glacier was declared dead due to climate change.Finally, at the end of Bioneers 2023, it was time for the panel I’d been eagerly anticipating: “Can Storytellers Help Save the World: From Fictional Narrative to Real World Change.”
From within the sanctum of inner transformation, the butterfly effect of each blessed one of us is amplifying the sea change in consciousness that is occurring right now. At this nexus of self, crisis, and life, we can use design as both vessel and revelation to evolve a flourishing world.

As a sophomore graphic design student at RISD, I was fascinated with Malcolm’s teaching and his professional work. I grew to deeply respect the big-hearted, sharp-witted, gregarious Kentuckian that he was. He could tell a story that could stay with somebody for a lifetime.
Creativity sources from our souls. This unifying spirit is always flowing. Design with it for the highest good. Its intention is to co-evolve us.
